FRIENDS OF THE G.C. MAIN LINE -
Leicestershire Area Group 2008 10th October: “A Railtour of Glorious Devon”, STEPHEN GAY describes his travels through this picturesque county, discovering the Tiverton and Hemyock branches, the ex-SR main line to Oakhampton and over Meldon Viaduct, continuing through Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley to Plymouth. 14th November: “The Rise and Fall of Railways on the Isle of Wight” The first of the islands' four railway lines was opened in 1852. After Nationalisation, a steady closure of most of the system was undertaken, until the remaining 8½ miles from Ryde Pier head to Shanklin were electrified, utilising displaced London Underground stock. The story is related and illustrated by BOB GOODMAN, President of the Lincoln Railway Society. 12th December: “Main Line Steam 2008 on Video” KARL JAUNCEY and DAVE RICHARDS, of "Preserved Steam on Video'', return again to present the very best of this years' spectacular steam action on Britain's main lines. 2009 9th January: “Steam on Ciné in the 50s and 60s” An evening of his own films is presented by MIKE CLEMENS. 13th February: “Kings Cross to Euston -850 Miles”The photographs taken by the legendary photographer, DEREK CROSS, are presented by his son, DAVID, himself an accomplished lensman, who takes us on the short trip along the Euston Road, but heading northwards, using the LNER route to Scotland, and returning on the West Coast route via Beattock and Shap back to London. 13th March: “Rails in the Peak District” After a gap of five years, renowned photographer, LES NIXON, returns to present a slide evening of images dating from the 1960s up to the present day, centred on the Midland Railway's main line through Derbyshire, but covering an area stretching from Woodhead in the north, to Ashbourne in the south.
Meetings are held at St Bartholomews Church Hall, Church Lane, Quorn, near Loughborough commencing at 7.30pm. Refreshments are available. LEICESTER RAILWAY SOCIETY 2008 16th September: “Sadler’s Ride” - BRIAN SADLER takes us on another trip through Leicestershire using a selection of his late-father's railway slides. 21st October: “Northwards From St Pancras” - JOHN DOWNING brings Part 6 of the journey northwards: having previously taken a number of branch lines, this time he will stick to the Midland Main Line. 18th November: “Steam On Ciné 1964-79” - our own DAVID WEBB presents a pot pourri of steam for all tastes, including main line, miniature, narrow gauge - in BR days and afterwards. 9th December: “A Question of Railways” - the 10th in our series of inter-society quizzes where the Society competes with Burton, Lutterworth, and "The Signal Box", for the 15C trophy.

Plus: "Birth of a Giant” - building a Garrett at Beyer Peacock, Manchester. 22nd September: “An Evening with COLIN JACKS” - more tales from the footplate by this well known author and ex-engine driver 29th September: Film show “Steam on the Midland Mainline” An hour of pure nostalgia. Plus: “The Bowes Railway and Its Incline”. 6th October: “30 Years of Preserved Steam” presented by HUGH BALLANTYNE, a look back at the Preservation Scene. 13th October: “LMS Locos at Nationalisation” presented by Mr A. TURNER - the changing scene when BR took over. 27th October: Film show “Steam Around the World” - spectacular scenes from five countries. Plus: “Building the Cape to Cairo Railway” a rare film from the 1930s 3rd November: Film show “The Snaefell Mountain Railway” the fascinating history of this famous line. Plus: “It's a Wash Out” - how it was in steam days. 10th November: Film show “Gone But Not Forgotten” a nostalgic look at the S & D. Plus: “Steam in the North West”. 17th November: “Engine Sheds in Steam Days” presented by CHRIS BANKS, continuing the story of the UK Sheds. 24th November: Film show “To Mallaig by Steam” a superb film of the road to the Isles. Plus: “Rush Hour in Bombay” – 5,000 passengers per train! 1st December: “45 Years of Railway Photography” presented by Les Nixon - a selection from the many excellent photos taken by this well known photographer. 8th December: Film show “Railway Oddities and Experiments”- things that might have been. Plus: “Edinburgh to London on the Royal Scotsman”. 15th December: Christmas Family Film Show. All your favourites - Tom and Jerry, Laurel and Hardy, etc. Everyone welcome.
We hope to see everyone in 2009, when our programme commences on Monday 5th January, and runs each Monday until 20th April, with our AGM on Monday 18th May. The Spring programme will be available in early November. Meetings commence at 8 p.m. on Mondays at the 'Duke of York', 91 Church Street, Matlock. NUNEATON RAILWAY CIRCLE 2008 25th September: “The Year So Far” Members bring everyone up to date with the latest news from the mainline and preservation scene courtesy of slides and video. 9th October: “Railway Scenes Around Nuneaton” Using his own colour slides taken over many years, TOM TOMALIN journeys to numerous locations, not only looking at the locomotives, but also at buildings and infrastructure. 23rd October: “Deltic: The Engine, Loco & Preservation” Deltic Preservation Society member NIGEL PAINE presents a historical review of this popular class, including the development of a marine engine. 6th November: “Liveries, Locos and Locations” Using his own material from recent years, member GRAHAM HURLEY takes us on a photographic tour of the UK visiting numerous locations in the process. 20th November: “Confessions of a Railway Chaplain” The ever-popular Reverend DAVID HARDY gives a further series of personal recollections from his time as Railway Chaplain for the Nuneaton area during the early 1980s. 4th December: “Anorak of Fire” At 13 years of age, junior member JAMIE COLLINS becomes the Circle's youngest ever guest presenter with his own personal recollections of the British railway scene over the last 12 months. 18th December: “Christmas Fun Night” The pre-Christmas meeting sees members providing the entertainment in the shape of a festive fun night. The three memorial trophies will be awarded on the night to photo and quiz winners. 2009 8th January: “Age of the Train - Part One” Circle member GEOFF WARCUP presents an illustrated review of Britain's railways using his own material taken between the early 1970s to the mid 1980s - an era seldom photographed. 22nd January: “Steam on Ciné Film” Using his father, Jim’s, vast ciné collection, MICHAEL CLEMENS takes a nostalgic journey through the 1960s. Footage includes Nuneaton, the WCML, GCR and the 'Withered Arm'. Pure nostalgia. 5th February: “Finsbury Park Memories” Finsbury Park depot in North London was where both JOHN SHARP and NIGEL MACK started their railway driving careers and they have many a tale or two driving Deltics, 40s, 47s and 31s. 19th February: “The 56s and 58s in France” GAVIN LAKE takes a tour of the new TGV east line from Paris to Strasbourg during its construction showing many of the BR Type 5s at work. Depot visits and French traction also included. 5th March: “The A1 Project” BOB ALDERMAN of the 'A1 Project', tells the remarkable story of 'Tornado' from planning, to construction and eventual steaming of the 50th A1 Pacific. 19th March: “Western Region Diesel Hydraulics” Devonian photographer, BERNARD MILLS presents an illustrated review of the WR Diesel Hydraulic fleet at work. All 74 Western's will feature during the evening. 2nd April: “The Keith Pirt Collection” By courtesy of Book Law Publications, ROGER HILL presents slides from the late-Keith Pirt collection. The ever-changing railway scene was recorded by Keith on his extensive travels from the 1950s. 16th April: “NMT and Test Trains” Using his own unique photographic material, ANDREW ROYLE presents a first hand account of his involvement with the Network Measurement Train and other Test Trains in general. 30th April: “AGM/Photo Competition” A busy, enjoyable evening as another season comes to a close.
